What Makes a Good Plastic Injection Mould?
Ask any moulder what makes a good injection mould and the answers converge on the same fundamentals: correct design, suitable steel, precise machining, effective cooling and careful fitting.
Design comes first. Wall thickness handling, draft, gating and ejection must suit the part and the material. A mould that is difficult to eject or slow to cool costs money on every cycle for its entire life
Build quality comes next. Accurate machining keeps the parting line clean and flash-free. Proper alignment features keep cores and cavities matched. Good cooling channels keep cycle times stable and parts dimensionally consistent.
Finally, a good mould is maintainable. Wear components should be replaceable, and the tool should be built so the tool room can service it over years of production.
